MATTHEW 6:5-13

5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

What is the deeper meaning of daily bread? What is Jesus saying we also need to pray for?

JOHN 6:28-35 (ESV)

28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

WHAT IS HE SAYING BY USING THIS SYMBOLISM?

1. That He is a gift, not a commodity or a right.

  • At its heart, the prayer for daily bread is a prayer for relationship. Because a gift is an expression that the bond between us is real.

2. Because it’s a gift, it is meant to be shared.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS:

  1. We pray with a posture of humble receiving.
  2. We live thankful lives, not stingy lives.
  3. We are radically generous and hospitable.
  4. The practice of fasting and feasting.
